Competitions and Opportunities for Students
Randolph Heights students have multiple opportunities to participate in academic competitions each year. Below, please find a list of opportunities offered. Feel free to contact Ms. Eisele for more informaiton on these opportunities.
Continental Math League. Students in grades 2-5 are eligible to participate in this math competition. Students who have chosen Mathletes as their TDAS course will automaitcally participate in each meet (see dates below). Any other student wishing to participate should let Ms. Eisele know. Participating in a CML meet involves taking a paper and pencil test. Scores are reported to CML and results can be found on their website (https://www.cmleague.com/). The meet dates are as follows (note: these are score deadline dates):
Grades 2 & 3: 1/6, 2/3, 3/10
Grades 4 & 5: 11/4, 12/2, 1/6, 2/3, 3/10
Math Masters. Fifth graders have the opportunity to participate in this team based math competition in April at Capitol Hill Magnet. THis year we wil be able to have a fourth grade team as well. http://www.mathmastersmn.org/
Wordmasters. Students in grades 3-5 are eligible to participate in this word analogy competition. Students who have chosen Code Word as their TDAS course will automatically participate in each meet (see dates below). Any other student who wishes to participate should let Ms. Eisele know and she will provide them with a word list. Participating in a Wordmasters meet involves taking a paper and pencil test. Results and further informaiton can be found on their webiste (https://www.wordmasterschallenge.com/). The meet dates are as follows (note: these are score deadline dates): 12/6, 2/28 & 5/1.
Scripps National Spelling Bee. Students in grades 3-5 have the opportunity to compete in the RHS spelling bee to determine who will be our school representative to the regional level of this competition (https://spellingbee.com/). Our school bee is scheduled for 12/11 at 2:30 pm.
Kids Philosophy Slam. Yearly competition where kids are asked to defend their side in a philosphical argument in either writing or visual arts. This year's topic TBD. http://www.philosophyslam.org
First Lego League. RHS has a lego robotics team that competes at the regional tournament at Capitol Hill Magnet School in January.
Destination Imagination. RHS has a number to teams that compete in this creative problem solving competition. Regional competition is at Harding HS on 2/15.
Battle of the Books. Students team up to read all of this year's Maud Hart Lovelace books and compete in a quizbowl like format to see who is the most knowledgeable. This year's BoB is scheduled for June.

90-Second Newberry Film Festival. Students create 90-second videos of Newberry Award winning books. Deadline 1/20/20. https://90secondnewbery.com/
Rubberband Contest. Invent somethign that uses a rubber band and submit your idea. Grades 5+. Deadline, 3/13/20. https://rubberbandcontest.org/

Bowseat Ocean Awareness. Create a piece about a coastal/marine species, place, or system that will be threatened, altered, or lost due to climate change. Ages 11+ . Due: 6/15/20. https://bowseat.org/programs/ocean-awareness-contest/overview/
