Curriculum

Reading

In First Grade, our primary focus is learning to read. We use phonics, guided reading books, trade books, and literature, all within Leiteracy Block model. Also, using guided reading techniques, every student is able to read and learn at their level. In addition to classroom reading, students participate in Book Club at the library 2 days a week. During this time, students read with an adult volunteer. Students are required to read the Book Club book and complete reading homework with their family at home.

Writing

We write daily in First Grade. Students write from their own experiences, to show comprehension of stories read, and to fulfill the state standards for writing genres, which include: Personal Narrative, Persuasive/Opinion writing, Procedural writing, Informational writing, a Book Recommendation and a variety of poetry styles. 

Spelling

SPPS, we follow the UFLI scope and sequence to introduce spelling patterns, heart and irregular words, and sight words.  Families can support their child in spelling by practicing the spelling words shared on the weekly newsletter. 

Mathematics

Math skills are taught using the HMH Intro Math Curriculum. The following content areas are covered:
operations and computation
numeration
patterns, functions and algebra
data 
measurement
geometry

Our math curriculum offers a variety of learning through daily work, math games, "hands on" exploration and nightly homework.
